President Georgi Purvanov hosted an energy summit ‘Natural Gas for Europe. Security and Partnership’ in Sofia on April 24 and 25. Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov conferred on outgoing Nato secretary-general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer the country’s highest honour, the Stara Planina first class, at a ceremony on April 23. Bulgarians were glad that the country had joined Nato and the country’s support for Nato’s open-door policy yielded positive results, Purvanov said. Scheffer is stepping down and will be succeeded by Denmark’s Anders Fogh Rasmussen. This was his last scheduled visit to Bulgaria as Nato secretary-general.

The tone of celebration that was attempted in hailing 2008 as the Year of Russia in Bulgaria and this year as the counterpoint Year of Bulgaria in Russia is ringing rather hollow.

Not only did Russia feel no qualms about leaving Bulgaria in the cold, quite literally, amid its dispute with Ukraine that led to the cutoff of gas supplies in January, but also Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin declined to grace Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov’s energy forum with his presence.

P2P (Peer to Peer) Conference Veliko Turnovo

Over the weekend of April 25 and 26 the Bulgarian web-community met for its P2P conference in Veliko Turnovo. Topics of the two days of presentations included: latest developments in web technologies, mobile marketing, blogs as media and Web 2.0 projects and ideas. With the latter category, the Ozone award, sponsored by blogtronix.com, was presented to one of 10 finalists selected by web users. The second prize, an MP3 player, went to Client.bg and the first prize, a notebook, was given to Svejo.net.

I arrived at the Zu Bar in Varna with a friend to find it was no longer the Zu Bar but Sizzlers Bistro. Apparently the previous Welsh owners had sold on the bar-cum snack bar, just behind Maria Louisa Blvd, to Tracey and Alex.
